Kintsugi (or Kintsukuroi, which means “golden repair”) is the centuries-old Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with a special lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Beautiful seams of gold glint in the cracks of ceramic ware, giving a unique appearance to the piece.

This repair method celebrates each artifact’s unique history by emphasizing its fractures and breaks instead of hiding or disguising them. Kintsugi often makes the repaired piece even more beautiful than the original, revitalizing it with new life….

Have you ever found yourself in that moment when the reflection staring back at you is unrecognizable? The face that’s framed inside the glass looks familiar yet feels distant. Rather than seeing those beautiful eyes sparkle, you now only see defeat. Rather than seeing that glow beaming from those beautiful cheeks, you now only see the cracks and invisible streams from those 2am tears. And rather than seeing that beaming smile where contagious laughter is created, you now only see the verbal cuts and bruises left from every bully that hunted you down.

Mirror Mirror on the wall, Who’s the most damaged and broken of them all? What lies will you fill my mind with today as I silently cry in my dark corner?

Yeah, I know. I know what you see in that mirror. I know what lies are poisoning your mind. I know because once upon a time ago, back in those dark days, I walked through those treacherous woods. I spent too many days playing Dodge with those big bad bullies and I spent too many nights fighting the suicidal lies in my head.

As if it wasn’t enough that I was dealt a cursed hand in this life, society decided to add fuel to the bonfire. Honestly, I found myself in a situation where the pain became comforting and that in itself became the most painful pain my body had ever endured. The poison begins to seep into every crack and crevice, toxifying your brain cells. Their structure morphs into molecular voices on a mission to slowly diminish your confidence. With every false label that becomes embedded into your mind, the happiness your heart once felt is lost. The love you once believed in, saw, felt, is now gone. The mind doesn’t just play powerful tricks, it also kills when weaponized with the proper societal bullets.

The most difficult task you will ever face in life is blocking out the outside static and not giving a shit what others say because you’re confident in yourself. You know who you are, you live your life for you and no one else. Now as crazy as the advice I’m about to give you may seem, it is the madness in it’s methodology that works. Add more fuel on that already lit bonfire. Yep, you heard me, you need to douse those flames in more gasoline and show those bullies, naysayers, critics and assholes just how brilliantly a badass mofo you are. See, those big bad bullies feed off of your self-doubts and fears, but the second they begin to see that sparkle in your eyes reignite they start to lose their big, their bad.

Each of us is born into this world with at least one “shit” card dealt in our hand. Some choose to accept it and play the game of life and some choose to slip that card into their back pocket as though they have the perfect hand. I don’t care who you, we all have something we are dealing with. Whether it is mental, physical or emotional, we all have something. WE ARE ALL CRACKED.

Keeps this reminder in your head, for every person you hurt you have earned yourself an enemy who can easily choose to turn those tables around, taking a hammer to every one of your insecurities. I fear that too many of you out there overlook that fact, instead you choose to blindly believe that you’re untouchable.

To all of you amazing souls out there residing on this spinning marble please remember this in your moments of anxious doubt, you are not broken beyond repair. You are beautifully imperfect, you are amazing, you are a warrior. Those bullies are temporary jerks sent to test your strength. That mirror hanging on the wall is tainted, detoxify it with a squirt of Windex and see the beautiful piece of living art that you are. Take care of yourself for there’s only one of you.
